Buena Vista University will host its Eleventh Annual Cultural Leadership Conference from April 7th – April 10th, 2011, with this year’s theme of “Bridging the Gap: The Best of Both Worlds.” Junior and senior students of diverse populations are encouraged to apply.
Students attending the CLC will have the opportunity to:

  • Gain perspective on life as a student leader - Attend breakout sessions that focus on leadership, community service, healthy lifestyles, decision-making, transitioning to college, diversity and race relations, as well as informational sessions on admissions, academics and enrollment and student services.

  • Discover the skills paramount to development as a young cultural scholar and leader - Participate in workshops that allow students to acknowledge the challenges of diversity, discuss effective avenues for exploration, and provide healthy alternatives for welcoming a diverse community.

  • Experience the various aspects of diversity in college life – Students will have an opportunity to discover skills integral to today’s campus community, gain a broader perspective on all facets of diversity, and network with college and high school students of diverse populations.

  • Explore student life – Students will be hosted by a current BVU student, staying in a residence hall, attending class with their host, and participating in several entertainment events designed especially for them.

A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and completion of a 300 word essay are required to be considered for conference acceptance. All travel and meal costs for conference attendees will be covered by Buena Vista University. The application deadline is Thursday, December 17th, 2010. Acceptance to the Cultural Leadership conference is a competitive process, students that will be accepted are expected to pay a deposit fee of $25 which will be fully refunded upon their arrival on campus for the conference. The deposit stands as a guarantee to the students commitment to attending the conference. Additionally, the weekend of April 7- 10 is a testing weekend for seniors planning on taking the ACT/ SAT, students needing to take advantage of this testing date and who wish to attend the conference have the option of selecting BVU as a testing site when they sign up for their ACT /SAT testing date.
Finally, I should also mention that Buena Vista University offers several scholarships, which you can discover by visiting the university website, any student who is accepted to BVU and meets the application requirements for any of the scholarships that we offer, will be given the opportunity to compete for those, through the admission process. The Department of Intercultural Programs administers the BVU Multicultural Scholarships which covers 4 years of tuition and room and board. Students eligible for this scholarship are given the opportunity to compete for it during the Cultural leadership conference.
